Samsung Galaxy Mega Overview

Samsung Galaxy Mega

The Samsung Galaxy Mega, as its name implies, is a huge smartphone. In fact, its 6.3” display – that’s an entire inch bigger than the Galaxy Note (Samsung’s first ever ‘phablet’) - makes it the biggest smartphone ever. Having such a large display means a large battery as well, plus an extremely thin profile that’s just 8mm in thickness.

The Galaxy Mega breaks the smartphone paradigm in that its large screen does not come with a top of the range feature set, which is an advantage in that it keeps the price tag down. It’s a device that’s been optimised for tasks that are more comfortably completed on a large screen – email, word processing, video playback, web browsing – but does not need the most powerful processor to achieve this.

With the success of the existing Galaxy range to build on, you can see the influence of the Mega’s siblings within its design. Aesthetically it borrows most from the looks of the S4, but has an appearance that can be likened to the other Galaxy devices that Samsung has released over the last 18 months, such as the Note 2 and the S3.

In terms of software, the Mega has the key productivity features from the Note 2 and the S4. Split screen mode is great for multi-tasking, dividing the screen so that you can view two different apps at the same time. Air View enables you to preview content simply by hovering a finger over it, while Samsung WatchOn works with the built-in IR blaster to turn the handset into a remote control. The features don’t end there though and it’ll take a good day or two for you to explore everything that the Mega offers.

Camera technology in smartphones has progressed significantly in recent years and this means that Samsung can include an 8MP camera without it pushing the price up too much. An 8MP camera takes great quality photos, which are perfect for viewing on the phone’s big display. Samsung’s newly developed camera features are also included, such as Drama Shot (which merges a burst of shots into one photo) and Sound & Shot, which records an audio clip with a photo. Your photos can then be grouped into a ‘Story Album’, making it easy to keep track of a specific day or special event.

Samsung has differed from many other manufacturers in recent years by including a removable battery and microSD slot. This trend is continued with the Mega, which has a whopping 3200mAh battery. This is needed to power such a large screen, but typically this still leads to better battery life than a handset with a smaller screen and battery combination. Being able to expand the handset’s storage by microSD is also useful and a feature that is sorely lacking from competitor devices that have a unibody design.

Samsung Galaxy Mega Split

Moving on to connectivity, the Mega has the full range of features for connecting peripherals and sharing content. There’s WiFi a/ac/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, GPS GLONASS and MHL for video out. There’s also a 3.5mm audio jack for attaching headphones and the aforementioned infrared blaster to transform the handset to a remote control. All of this is packed into a frame that is an incredible 8mm in thickness and weighs 199g.

Even though the Mega is indeed a smartphone, it’s befitting to mention the telephone functionality towards the end of its description. With a phone this size, it’s one of the features that will be used least frequently, but it’s still useful to have it at those times when written communication simply isn’t enough. Unlike tablets, which don’t have call capabilities, the Mega prioritises the large screen first, which is a logical way of doing things for those that don’t make calls very often.

If you don’t fancy raising such a large device to your head to make a phone call, you can always attach a Bluetooth headset, which also gives you the means to continue using the device whilst chatting.
