Acer Iconia W511 Tablet & Keyboard Dock Overview
Windows 8 has ushered in a whole new range generation of tablets, ultrabooks and other styles of new computing device, all capable of running a full desktop OS. The Acer Iconia W511 can be nicely put into the 'hybrid' category; a well built 10 inch tablet, with a full multitouch screen, that also runs the complete Windows 8 Pro edition.
Where many tablets can falter, is that they are only powered by a mobile OS. iPads run iOS, there are an overwhelming number of Android slates and even plentry of Windows versions running the restrictive RT system. Whilst these can be useful for allowing some browsing and media ina lightweight portable product, getting some proper work done has never been easy at this form factor. Windows 8 Pro has legacy support for a huge range of full desktop programs, as well as modern apps and mobile connectivity for your entertainment needs.
Connectivity is king in the modern world and the Iconia W511 takes full advantage of this fact. Not only do you have the freedom of a WiFi enabled tablet, Acer have also included a 3G module - simply pop in a SIM card (full size) with a connected data plan and enjoy mobile browsing when out and about. Keeping up to date, Acer have also included NFC and Bluetooth 4.0 (low energy). To keep the profile down to a minimum, Acer have employed micro HDMI and micro USB ports on the side of the tablet, with a micro USB to female USB adapter included in the box if you need to use flash memory on the go.
Striking a blance between power, speed and price is always tough at a small form factor, but Acer might have hit the nail on the head by choosing the Intel Atom Z2760 1.8 GHz Dual Core processor. The Z2760 is enough to drive the Iconia W511 all day, with a low power draw to extend battery life and delivering a power boost when required, such as opening new apps.
Not only is Windows 8 Pro optimised for touch input, so is the new Internet Explorer 10. Being a full desktop program means IE10 has support for Flash, Java and all manner of other plugins not generally suited to mobile browsing, whilst remaining responsive and touch ready as one would expect. Other desktop browsers can be downloaded & installed, however IE10 is the best touch centric experience to date.
Windows 8's LIve Tile interface, Charms and gesture support are out in full force on the W511, although you can revert to the desktop mode should you prefer it.
Acer have included a cut down QWERTY keyboard dock with the W511. Docking more than doubles the battery life of your tablet and turns into someting reminiscent of a netbook. When docked, you have the choice of touch input or using the trackpad. The dock also adds an extra full size USB port.
Overall, the Acer Iconia W511 is a fantastic portable package. A tablet when you need to be on the move quickly and a notebook for the times when you need to get down to some proper work.
