Archos 50 Helium Overview
Archos are most well known for their incredibly well engineered and feature rich personal media players and storage devices from a few years ago. As technology evolved and brought many of the separate devices we used under the guise of the all encompassing smartphone, Archos moved on to developing tablets, remaining a niche brand providing quality products to the those in the know.
Now in 2014, as mobile hardware technologies begin to plateau in terms of power and Android has become a stable and mature platform, Archos has tipped their hand to manufacturing smartphones. The Helium range has two differently sized devices, 45 and 50, both of which are 4G LTE compatible and powered by a quality Qualcomm quad core processor. With top-drawer design, manufacturing and an aggressive price point, the Archos Helium range is looking to disrupt the established manufacturers this year.
Power & Performance
With huge advances in mobile processor technology in recent years, smartphone specifications have reached incredible highs. Archos have picked out one of the most recent Qualcomm processors, the 1.4 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 to power the Helium range.
Whilst not the absolute cream of the crop found in the likes of HTC, Samsung or Sony's flagships, the 400 is still an incredibly powerful processor that will speed through daily tasks and provide a more than suitable platform for gaming. The 400s inclusion also allows for a cost saving, pitching the Helium range at a more aggressive price point than its competitiors.
Many manufacturers choose to adapt Android to their liking, sometimes so much that it becomes unrecognisable. Archos have decided to stick to the standard design of Jelly Bean, choosing functionality and accessibility over a modified interactive space. Jelly Bean on the Helium range is as close to stock Android as you will see outside of the Nexus range. As well as providing a performance boost over highly skinned competitors, this will also allow Archos to provide timely updates, much closer in line to Google's main revisions to Android.
There are a few Archos specific apps to augment the experience though. A true File Explorer is included, massively useful for those who like to micro manage their storage and files. Also, Archos provide their bespoke Video Player and Audio Player; which have built on years of experience to create simple and elegant media hubs.
The 50 Helium offers 4G LTE compatibility on the 800 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600 ranges (international bands 20, 3, 1 & 7). This falls back to high speed HSPA+, alongside the stalwarts of the smart world; WiFi & Bluetooth 3.0. You also get to make use of WiFi direct, HDMI video out via the MHL equipped micro USB port and USB OTG. Archos even include a USB OTG cable in the box with the Helium range!
