Transferring the design of the well-received Zenfone 2, the Zenfone Zoom is a beautifully styled phone with incredibly thin tapered edges.
With a large camera module needed to provide the excellent photographic results of the Zenfone Zoom, the weight of the handset has been skillfully redistributed to avoid a top-heavy feel.
The Zenfone Zoom runs the Google Android operating system - version 5.0 (Lollipop) - so the complete suite of Google services are installed out of the box including Google Play, Gmail, Drive, Maps, YouTube, Translate and many more.
Android 5.0 delivers many changes over the 4.x Jelly Bean range including:
- Material Design - a flattened, modernised interface that will now be seamless through phone navigation & apps
- Power management tools & a power saving mode for extending battery life
- Better notifications: respond from your lockscreen, or turn on priority mode to reduce them to the bare minimum. Notifications & calls can even be turned off when watching a movie or full-screening an app.
- User accounts: make individual profiles with unique settings and app access for your phone.
- Improved security against malware
- SmartLock: pair your Android with another trusted device and it will only unlock when the two are paired.
ASUS have put their own 'skin' to the Android operating system which differentiates it from other manufacturers' phones. Called ZenUI it has 15 million users worldwide and is constantly updated.
Extra features of ZenUI include ZenMotion, SnapView and Trend Micro Security, none of these are found on the basic Android system.
Personal and Business
Despite efforts to separate them, our personal and work lives are often mixed together. It's not uncommon to have two phones, one to cover each purpose. The ZenFone 2 can act well in either capacity.
You have access to all standard connectivity requirements including Bluetooth and WiFi, as well as mobile data for both global 3G networks and select 4G/LTE services, enabling fast downloads and internet connectivity on the move (subject to SIM, data plan and coverage).
GPS is built-in too, combined with Google Maps and turn-by-turn navigation, you can find your way whether you just need to get a few streets away or several hundred miles cross-country.
This is the reason you'll be wanting a Zenfoon Zoom. This excellent camera is manufactured using 10 elements and incorporates modern optical image stabilistaion (OIS) technology.
Unlike previous attempts to bring optical zoom technology to smartphones, the Zenfone Zoom doesn't have lots of extra bulk at the back. In fact, the camera module only adds an extra 1-2mm of thickness, with a smooth, contoured edging.
The 3x optical zoom is more of a game changer than the seemingly small number might suggest. With digital only zoom offered on practically every other other major smartphone, it can be difficult to get decent shots when anything other than the correct distance away.
Digital zoom makes the resultant image choppy and pixelated, even if you have a high megapixel rating - the mathematical method for zooming in this manner can't help but lose detail quickly.
Optical zoom adds another dimension to your mobile photography, allowing you to ahieve perfect pictures that would otherwise be out of your grasp with any other phone.
