DJI Spark Overview

DJI has shot to global popularity by providing high technology at an affordable price. Personal drones and UAVs were once very expensive items, but DJI brought them to the masses with their Phantom range.

The new DJI Spark takes the best parts of recent Phantom models and miniaturises them into an incredibly portable mini-drone.

This diminutive quadcopter launches quickly, holds stable autonomous flight, and captures high definition stills and images at the touch of a button.

Your smartphone can be used to control the basic model via the DJI GO app. DJI LightBridge technology provides an HD Live View to your screen; simply tap on the screen to create waypoints and watch Spark travel to them automatically.

With the Fly More Combo, an additional controller is included to give you fine flight control with twin joysticks. You can also mount your smartphone into this for a live feed as you fly.

DJI Spark Flight Modes

Intelligent Flight Modes


Use QuickShot to take professional looking videos with a single tap. QuickShot has 4 individual modes:

  • Rocket will ascend vertically with the camera pointed downwards
  • Dronie will fly backwards and upwards, with the camera locked on a single subject
  • Circle pulls a 360-degree loop around the subject
  • Helix flies upwards, with an outward spiral


Create waypoints to fly to - just tap on the Live View screen. With its Vision technology, Spark will avoid obstacles on its path to your waypoint. During the flight, you can tap again to capture images.

Co-ordinate mode will fly to a set point at a constant altitude. Direction mode will respond to new taps, changing direction as you create new waypoints.


Perfect for shooting moving subjects, ActiveTrack will recognise and centre a target. In ActiveTrack mode, Spark follows the target keeping it centred for incredible footage.

Trace tracks either fixed from the front or behind, or in a circular pattern. Profile follows from a fixed side-on position.

Obstacle detection will move the Spark out of the path of potential collisions during the automatic tracking.

All you need to do is face the Spark and perform set gestures to take pictures automatically.

Raise or wave your arms, or make a frame with your fingers, and Spark will centre you in the frame and take a picture.

PalmControl mode has the Spark follow your hand movements and even land or take off from the palm of your hand!

High-Performance Camera

Mechanical Gimbal

Spark has a 2-axis mechanical gimbal. Combined with DJI's UltraSmooth algorithms, shake and rolling shutter effects are greatly reduced for stable images and video.

Powerful Lens

The 5 element lens of the Spark's camera features a f/2.6 wide-angle aperture and 25mm equivalent focal length. This makes for sharp images in a variety of lighting conditions. With a 1/2.3" sensor and large pixels, the Spark is more sensitive to light fluctuations than the iPhone 7.

Shooting Modes

All earlier DJI shooting modes are available as well as two new options: Pano & ShallowFocus.

Pano will shoot panoramas in either horizontal or vertical pan by automatically adjusting the gimbal and heading.

ShallowFocus utilises 3D vision technology to capture images with a shallow depth of field.

Precision Control

With an aerodynamic, lightweight design, the Spark can reach high speeds and remain stable in strong winds. The compact design has pulled the gimbal and camera flush with the drone body for increased stability.

HD WiFi Video Transmission

DJI's HD WiFi technology allows for Live View from Spark's camera up to 1.2 miles (7kn) away.

Aerial Immersion

Use Sport Mode to unlock the Spark's top speed potential. In this mode, the camera is set to FPV by default so the camera view always follows the flight. For full immersion, DJI Googles (sold separately) are available to experience the first person view like you're actually flying yourself!

Flight Autonomy

Spark's FlightAutonomy system uses several sensors simultaneously for stable, uninterrupted flight. This includes the main camera, a downward-facing visual positioning system, forward-facing 3D Sensing System, dual-band GPS, IMU and custom 24-core processing.

Return To Home

Just like the larger DJI models, Spark can return to its take-off point at the push of a button, or if it senses a loss of connection to the control app. The process will also happen automatically if the battery runs too low compared to the distance away from home.

Intelligent Battery

The Intelligent Battery is constantly reporting its remaining capacity and flight range to the app so you remain fully aware of the conditions.

No Fly Zones

It is the responsibility of the drone / UAV pilot to respect no-fly zones and local aviation laws when controlling their DJI Phantom product.

DJI has a page dedicated to listing no-fly zones in many developed countries. Click HERE to stay updated.

A No Fly Zones feature is incorporated into DJI products which, using GPS to locate the drone's position, should stop them from entering restricted areas. This should not be relied upon however in cases of hardware / GPS failure, and the pilot should always remain vigilant of their location.
