- Documentation & Instructions
As its name suggests, the Google Nexus 6 is the sixth Nexus handset to be released by Google. With a 5.96" display it's massive compared to previous Nexus handsets. Such a large handset may not be for everyone, but those that prefer the unadulterated Android experience, as well as a large display, will relish the opportunity to try Lollipop on a big screen.
In terms of technology, the Nexus 6 screen is Quad HD AMOLED. The resolution is 2560 x 1440 with a pixel density of 493 PPI, so you can be sure of a crisp picture. The glass of the display is Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which protects against scratches.
Dual front-facing speakers accompany the screen of the Nexus 6. These make the handset great for music playback as well as watching movies and playing games. All of this requires plenty of power and the Nexus 6 doesn't fall short there; a 2.7GHz quad-core processor and 3GB of RAM are the driving forces behind Google's new phablet.
With a large screen comes large power consumption, but also a large battery. In fact, other large screen devices, such as the latest Galaxy Note devices, tend to come with extremely good battery life. The Google Nexus 6 is another winner when it comes to battery, especially with Lollipop's power saving features and Motorola's turbo charger.
The Turbo Charger is included in the box and can provide 6 hours battery life from a 15-minute charge, and Lollipop's power saving mode can extend battery life by an extra 90 minutes when switched on. This means you've got a couple of good options should you ever find yourself with critically low battery and only a short window in which to charge your phone or make other arrangements.
In terms of internal storage, the Nexus 6 either comes in 32GB or 64GB variants. You can see the options that we have available when you choose to buy. Android users, who have been frustrated in the past by a lack of both internal storage and external storage, will welcome the minimum of 32GB of storage. The Nexus 6 does not include external storage options, but 32GB or 64GB is a reasonable amount of space for storing music, movies, games and alike.
The rear camera is another aspect of the Google Nexus 6 that's had a decent spec bump. Motorola has included a 13MP sensor and f2.0 lens, plus optical image stabilisation and HDR+, ensuring that the Nexus 6 takes a good standard of photo. It comes with Google's camera app pre-installed, and there is, of course, the option to install other camera apps from the Google Play Store. The front facing camera is fairly well spec'd with a 2MP sensor.
Finally we'll have a look at the connectivity options, of which the Nexus 6 has many: Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth, DLNA, SlimPort, USB OTG, USB Host, Slimport, LTE. What do these all do?
USB OTG and USB host are interesting features - they let you connect other USB accessories via the microUSB connector. This means that you can attach things like a USB mouse and keyboard and control your Nexus as you would a traditional computer.
SlimPort is another component needed to truly transform your phone into a computer set up - it enables you to connect the handset to a larger display. Many other Android handsets opt for the video out standard of MHL, but Nexus devices have used SlimPort for a while now. To make use of it, you simply need a SlimPort adaptor. We've got more detail about SlimPort in this post.
You probably know a fair bit about Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth already, so we won't go into too much detail about those. DLNA is also quite well known now and you can take advantage of it if you've got a DLNA-enabled TV. It enables you to wirelessly display the content from your phone on your television, which makes it very useful for video playback.
Finally on the list of connectivity options is LTE. Our UK model works on LTE bands1/3/5/7/8/9/19/20/28/41. The Nexus 6 does of course have 3G capability as well, and our model runs of the frequencies 800 / 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 / 900MHz.
The Google Nexus 6 is the first handset to run Android 5.0 Lollipop, which was first demonstrated at Google I/O in June 2014. Lollipop is designed to run harmoniously across smartphone, tablet, smartwatch, TV and even your car. Its main features include:
- Material design - a bolder, more colourful interface for Android
- A new power saving mode that can extend battery life by up to 90 minutes
- Better power management tools
- Improved notifications: respond from your lockscreen, or turn on priority mode to reduce them to the bare minimum. If you're watching a movie, notifications are automatically turned off and you're given the choice of whether or not to answer incoming calls.
- Multiple user accounts: have more than one sign-in for your phone or tablet. Previously this feature had been reserved for tablets only, but is now available for phones on Android 5.0 Lollipop.
- Improved security against malware
- SmartLock: pair your Android with another trusted device and it will only unlock when the two are paired. A third party called SkipLock achieves similar results.
