LG G6 SIM Free / UK
Following an experiment with modular accessories in 2016, LG has a more standard design for 2017's G6.
There's still plenty of unique features, most prominent of all being the 18:9 (or 2:1) screen ratio for the large 5.7" display. With over 80% screen to body ratio, the screen dominates the front of the handset.
The LG G6 also features a return of the rear-mounted power button; this time, integrated into the fingerprint sensor. Volume controls are located on one side.

With a desire to just add in the latest technology and let high specifications sell the phone, there's not always a lot of innovative choices in flagships each year. With the G6, LG is changing that notion by changing one of the core components; the screen.
For many years, the standard screen ratio on smartphones has been 16:9. This matches up with the shift to widescreen formats for televisions, laptops & monitors, TV broadcast and other video content such as YouTube streaming and media-rich websites.
LG though have decided to switch up the display on the G6 to a new ratio of 18:9. Married with a beautifully detailed Quad HD+ resolution (1,440 x 2,880), the FullView display has been created.
Standard 16:9 content which cannot be proportionally adjusted will continue to work as normal, generally with a border, although we can expect developers of audiovisual content to be able to target the new ratio correctly.
Square UX content
The 18:9 ratio can also be realised as two perfect squares put side by side. This has allowed LG to incorporate squares into the design philosophy of the new LG interface.
At many points, you will find the screen split into two squares. For instance, in the LG Calendar app, one square shows a traditional calendar in date, week or monthly view. The second square will show a detailed scheduling view for tasks and events.
The same occurs in the LG Mail app, with square 1 displaying your list of emails and square 2 delivering a preview. Throughout the LG interface, you can be surprised by where this feature is used to enhance the system.
Dolby Vision™& HDR10
Both of these technologies are employed by the LG G6. When used together, images and video have unparalleled colour contrast and vibrancy. Video streaming sites such as Amazon Prime Video and Netflix are fast working to ensure their original content and licensed blockbusters are outputting with these new display technologies in mind.
Dolby Vision also allows for you to select one of four viewing modes to quickly switch to the most optimum colour and temperature profile depending on your surroundings: Vivid, Standard, Bright and Cinematic.
Previously only available on the Google Pixel range, this new Assistant will be launching on flagship devices throughout 2017.
Google Assistant is available no matter where you are in the phone's interface. Activated either by a personalised phrase or a tap of the Google widget on the home screen, once open, the Assistant awaits your questions or commands.
Assistant is integrated within the Google Search app and has access to your personal Google profile. Due to this, results for queries are tailored to your lifestyle, previous search requests and, potentially, your existing engagements, tasks, reviews and location history.
Responses to queries are framed in an interface that appears like a chat application. As Assistant develops and works with you, you will be able to maintain lengthier discussions with the system using more natural language.
The Assistant will also be able to make recommendations into other apps. For instance searching for local restaurants may intelligently prompt you to call the phone number and save a reminder to your calendar after a reservation is made.
You can also use Assistant for simple questions and web searches, and to help you locate information on your device, for instance, pictures or videos you took on a specific day or location.
A dual camera set up has been an important development in mobile photography in the past year, although depending on the implementation, results can vary drastically.
At their best, dual cameras allow you to take images with enhanced depth of field, contrast and brightness, plus introduce special effect and layering technology not possible with just one lens.
LG has always pushed the boundaries of camera technology with the G range. On the LG G6, both rear cameras have a 1/3.06"sensor with f/2.4 aperture and 1.12μm size pixels. The difference is one lens has a super-wide 125° field of view compared to the standard 71° on the other.
Switching between the two cameras is easy as swiping across the screen. Also available are specialised shooting modes and effects utilising both lenses simultaneously.
Square Camera Mode
Thanks to the 18:9 screen ratio, LG's square interface finds a perfect home in the camera application. Several amusing (and practical) modes have been included to showcase the square display feature.
Snap Shot keeps a preview of your previously taken picture below the frame for the new image, with options to swiftly delete it if not wanted.
Grid Shot provides you with the ability to create 2x2 grids of both still images and videos.
Guide Shot lets you place any stored image underneath the viewfinder as a reference. This lets you recreate poses in images or take a new picture which complements it.
Match Shot similar to the guide shot above, this mode will combine the result of your new and original images into one picture.
Wide Angle Front
Great for group selfies and video calls where you want to get a decent crop of the view behind you, LG has included a 100° front-facing camera.
LG G6 Game Collection
To better showcase the new 18:9 screen ratio, LG has teamed up with some big name game developers to optimise some famous apps.
The Game Collection includes Temple Run 2, Spiderman Unlimited, Simcity BuildIt, Cookie Jam, Genies & Gems and Crossy Road.
These are all part of the official LG G6 Game Collection and can be downloaded for free by redemption through the LG Smart World application.
IP68 Water, Dust and Shock Resistance
Thanks to a fully sealed construction, this is the first flagship LG phone to have an IP68 rating. The phone is water and dust resistant and so perfectly capable of withstanding sand, powders and splashes of fresh water, including being run under a tap.
Internally, the corners of the LCD panel have been rounded off to match the curved display. This results in a sturdier build, helping to dissipate impact force and resulting in the screen being far less likely to crack should the phone be dropped on its corners.
High Fidelity Recording
The LG G6 features two high AOP microphones to record sound even at high decibels (>100 dB at concerts and sports events.)
Additional audio recording features within the video recording application allow you to apply filters and adapt the sensitivity of certain frequency ranges.
An audio-only system can record HD sound at 24 bit / 192kHz FLAC (AAC [MP3] WAV). Hi-Fi video recording is also available at 16bit / 48kHz (AAC) or 24bit / 48kHz in LPCM (requires a special CODEC for playback).
