Nokia Lumia 1520 Overview
Ever increasing screen sizes have brought forth a new product category in recent times. The 'phablet': half phone, half tablet, these devices offer all the cellular connectivity and features of a traditional Smartphone, whilst providing the biggest screens possible to enjoy media and games content. They might not fit in every pocket but phablets have been increasing in popularity in the Android world, now it's time for Nokia's attempt on the form factor in Windows Phone with the massive new Lumia 1520.
Nokia have catered for pretty much every other size and consumer grade with the Lumia range to date with decent success, so it's not a huge surprise to see them tackle the phablet. With a Full HD, 6 inch ClearBlack IPS LCD screen and Gorilla Glass 2, colours will pop and games will immerse you like never before on a Windows Phone handset.
With an upgrade in screen size also comes additions in raw power. Windows Phone doesn't require as much under the hood to run smoothly as other systems so Nokia Lumias have often kept out of the spec. race. This time, however, Nokia has placed a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor into the 1520, alongside 2 GB of RAM. This is the highest grade mobile processor currently available, clocking in at 2.26GHz for each of its' 4 cores. Whilst the average user might not notice much, the hardware means no slowdown and the Adreno 330 GPU provides the smoothest experience for anyone looking to play (or help develop and port) the newest games for Windows Phone.
PureView technology, from Nokia, has evolved over the years to be the true power player in smartphone and mobile photography. The 1020 showed the world what could be squeezed into a handset with the incredible 41 MP sensor and the 1520 is playing from the same song sheet with its PureView 20 MP sensor. ZEISS optics remain integral to the camera's performance and the smaller sensor keeps a slimmer profile to what is otherwise a much larger handset. Continuing to support mobile photography, Nokia has also announced that the 1520 (as well as the 1020 via an update) will be the first major brand smartphones to support shooting in RAW format, to preserve the exact image that is captured before any processing.
Nokia's in house additions to WP8 have proven popular since their conception and the newest versions will be available on the 1520 from day 1. The Nokia Camera app combines the Smart, Pro and Video modes available in earlier versions and makes them accessible from a single tap within the main app. All the Pro interface sliders seen on the 1020 are also available so you can make quick adjustments to the picture quality on the fly. The HERE services unique to Nokia are also available in their entirety.
If you've been a fan of WIndows Phone for some time but envied the larger phones appearing on the Android scene in recent years then the Lumia 1520 is definitely the device for you. With the mix of top of the range hardware, design, camera and super-sized screen, this could well be the best Windows Phone 8 handset yet.
