Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus Overview
The Samsung Galaxy SII was a hugely successful handset that really put Samsung on the map as a leading Android manufacturer. The Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus could be viewed as a refined version of the SGS2 - adding improved performance and functionality boosts thanks to some small, yet effective, hardware and software improvements.
The change that will have the most notable impact to the Samsung Galaxy S II Plus is the upgrade to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. This will be a big improvement from Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which shipped with the SGS2. The inclusion of Project Butter with Jelly Bean makes for very smooth scrolling and screen transitions. There is of course a whole wealth of features that have been added to Android since then as well.
Having the TouchWiz Nature UX provides the SGS2 Plus with some of the features that were unique selling points when it was first released: Smart Stay stops the screen from going to sleep when eye contact is being made by the user; Direct Call enables the user to initiate a call just by lifting the handset to the ear when composing a text message and Smart Alerts provides updates about missed notifications as soon as the handset is picked up.
Also included with the SGS2 Plus are various voice control features. S Voice is Samsung's alternative to the likes of Google Now and Siri, which enables text dictation and voice commands, such as instructing the handset to take a photo. Another new feature called Voice Unlock also allows the user to unlock the handset by voice.
For all purposes, the camera is the same on the SGS2 Plus - 8MP rear, 2MP front facing - apart from the improvement of zero shutter lag. However, with the addition of better camera features to ToucwWiz and stock Android since the release of the original SGS2, software also contributes to better overall photos.
One aspect that has been downgraded so to speak is the internal storage. The SGS2 Plus comes with 8GB rather than 16GB, but this has been accounted for with a microSD slot that will accept cards up to 64GB rather than 32GB. The RAM remains the same at 1GB and the dual-core processor is again clocked at 1.2GHz. However, as mentioned earlier the inclusion of Android Jelly Bean will make a huge difference to user experience when it comes to speed.
Other features that remain the same on the SGS2 Plus are the display (4.3" Super AMOLED Plus 480 x 800), battery (1650mAh Li-ion) and dimensions (125.3 x 66.1 x 8.49 mm). The handset is slightly heavier, weighing 121g as opposed to 116g.
All in all the SGS2 Plus is a great mid-range handset. While it may not have the top of the range features of its larger sibling the Samsung Galaxy S3, the slightly smaller screen on the SGS2 Plus may be preferrable to some and a dual-core processor and Android Jelly Bean will provide a software experience that is very much comparable.
